This article presents an outline of the history, the structure and the functioning of the Ruhr-Universität in Bochum (RUB) in Germany with a special focus on the library complex. The division of the university libraries, the organisation of their work, the criteria of availability of various types of documents and the standards of cataloguing, particularly those concerning subject processing, have also been described in this article. The author visited the libraries of the Ruhr-Universität in Bochum in May 2011 as part of a direct staff exchange organised by the Jagiellonian Library for several years. She graduated in Turkish language and literature and since January 2008 has worked in the Subject Processing Department of the Jagiellonian Library.
This article presents the exchange of letters between J. I. Kraszewski (1812-1887), one of the most popular Polish writers of the nineteenth century, and W. Wisłocki (1841-1900), the curator of the Jagiellonian Library since 1874, an outstanding librarian, bibliographer, publisherand the chief editor of the Bibliographical Guide. The present edition comprises letters from the collection of the Jagiellonian Library, that is, nine letters written by Kraszewski between 1879 and 1886 and eight letters written by Wisłocki between 1871 and 1886, whose autographs are stored under the shelfmarks 6540 and Przyb. 300/81.
This article presents the Polish adaptation of the Adult Reading History Questionnaire (ARHQ) created by Dianne Lefly and Bruce Pennington. ARHQ is used to identify risk of familial dyslexia, entailing formal interview of the parent of a child considered at risk for specific reading and spelling disorders. Its questions primarily address adult function. The article describes a pilot study conducted on 313 parents of 214 children. Analysis was performed to evaluate selected aspects of the validity and reliability of the Polish ARHQ adaptation, and to prepare the final version for normalisation. The results favourably demonstrated the validity of the ARHQ-PL tool. This was confirmed by correlation with the assessed reading, writing and phonological ability scores achieved by the children of parents tested. The reliability of the Polish version of the questionnaire was also good. The results so far indicate that the adapted questionnaire may, after normalisation, prove to be a useful tool for the diagnosis of familial risk of dyslexia in Poland.
This article presents two models for conducting sociological research on attitudes towards history, with a brief discussion on the results of a survey conducted in 2015 on a sample of 3744 students of upper secondary schools. The first model is based on the concept of collective memory, its functionality and viability. It relates to a typology of attitudes based on the experience of history in everyday life (the so-called antiquary, historical and monumental dimensions). This typology is enriched with the idea of family, local and national levels. The second model is the structural definition of attitudes, popularized in Poland by Stefan Nowak, founded on three components of attitudes (affective, cognitive and behavioral).
This article reports analysis of approaches to engagement by parents of lower secondary school students, with and without special educational needs, as well as their effect on school achievement. Analysis of results from almost 1,5 thousand of Polish lower secondary school students, including almost 300 students statemented as SEN, showed that parents in both groups varied in their strategies to help their children. Parents of students with SEN more often directly helped their children with homework, although this strategy negatively correlated with school achievement for both groups. The results opposed the widely held claim that students with SEN require alternative types of parental support. These findings may, therefore, demonstrate a practical role for the shaping of parental and teacher’ belief about the most efficient means to improved achievement for lower secondary school students.
This article reviews investigation into the significance of the physical environment of the classroom (proxemics) to the learning process, climate and quality of communication. It focuses on analysis of zones of distance, crowding and concentration, seating arrangements and the interior decoration of teaching space. A review of the research shows that the closer the physical distance between the teacher and students, the more conducive to higher academic performance. Lack of adequate physical space creates problems with concentration for students, decreases accuracy in performance of tasks and increases incidence of aggressive behaviour. Experts in classroom proxemics stress the importance of the seating arrangements in the classroom for the relationship between teacher and students, as well as for the process of teaching. The setting of benches in a system-series, a horseshoe or segments is frequently preferred. Researchers of classroom proxemics assure that innovative seating arrangements, brighter wall colours, colourful carpets and decoration can create a more stimulating and pleasant learning environment for the student.
This article shows the importance of legal deposit to the national culture. The legal deposit collections provide the contemporary readers with a research and education workshop, and they also document the intellectual, cultural and social life of the country. Legal deposit is particularly substantial to the preservation of publications that are out of sale. It is also the basis of the national bibliography and editorial statistics. The state of legal deposit is influenced by the lawin force, by the attitudes of publishers and libraries, and also by the behaviour and opinions of other environments. The failure of some publishers to fulfil their legal obligation results in the distortion of statistics as well as in the absence of their publications in library reference databases. Of course, it also influences the number of books in the authorised libraries. The desired change in the current law, though obviously essential, is hampered by the conflict of interests between libraries and publishers. It should also be underlined that legal deposit has played a significant role in the formation of the book collection of the Jagiellonian Library already for over two centuries. Thanks to this, the Jagiellonian Library enjoys the unofficial status of a national library and its special and worthy image is being established in the social consciousness.
This paper analyses the scale and sources of views on the prevalence of corruption in the education sector in Poland. Through the use of public opinion surveys, I answer questions on how the corruption level in Polish educational institutions has changed over time and how it compares to other public institutions (such as the health care sector and police) and to the situation in other European countries. My goal is to investigate the effect of individual-level predictors of perceiving schools as corrupt in Poland, with special attention given to structural determinants and previous bribe-giving experiences of respondents. The results reveal that in Poland relatively few respondents have experienced recent acts of giving bribes in schools or perceive educational institutions as corrupt. However, there is a structural pattern behind the sources of negative opinions. The effect of socio-economic determinants on views relating to corruption in Polish schools is strongly pronounced and trends in the opposite direction compared to the effects reported in other European countries.
This paper examines teachers’ involvement in improving and developing their skills. The analysis is based on data from the study of Human Capital in Poland. However, the main analysis is complemented by a detailed comparison of indicators of teachers’ professional development activities included in other studies (TALIS, PIAAC and research on teachers’ time and working conditions). The first part of the paper defines the concept of teachers’ professional development used in the analysis, followed by an identification of the developmental functions and factors that may affect its effectiveness. The next part of this paper presents a self-assessment of teachers’ and other professionals’ skills results based on the study of Human Capital in Poland. Then, the basic indicators of teachers’ professional development from four various studies are discussed, identifying the methodological approaches and specificity of each. The last part of the paper presents a broader discussion on the results of the study of Human Capital relating to the professional development activities undertaken by teachers.
This paper extends debate on educational inequalities in Poland. Drawing on the longitudinal study based on pupils born in 1992–1993 I investigate effect of social origin and cognitive skills on student’s performance in matura. Evidence suggests that students from advantaged backgrounds receive higher marks as compared to students originating from the lower classes which may be regarded as reproduction of educational inequalities. At the same time student performance is much more affected by cognitive skills that may indicate substantial role of meritocracy. In addition, it shows that student performance is linked with quality of secondary schools related to learning facilities, proper guidance, relevant curricula, etc. Students attending more effective schools are more likely to perform better regardless of social origin and cognitive skills.
This paper investigates workers who obtained vocational education for the link between job flexibility and life long learning. Using data from the Determinants of Educational Decisions – Household Panel Survey carried out in Poland in 2013–2014, various non-standard contractual arrangements were analysed, including temporary and part time jobs, as well as various types of work contract. It was shown that for workers with vocational skills, the relationship between flexibility of job arrangements and training was complex. It varied depending not only on the type of job contract, but also on a worker’s age and gender. Types of workers who benefitted the most from flexible job arrangements with regard to educational activities were identified.
This paper presents research assessing examiners’ knowledge of selected rules of syntax and semantic correctness in the Polish language. About half the examiners demonstrated knowledge of the set of rules, but about 15% completely failed to score on the syntax exercise (in regard of this research). The replies of one third of respondents did not allow unequivocal assessment of their level of syntactic competence. The results of the research tasks indicated that examiners of the Polish language often follow their intuition in decisions about language correctness (in the same way as ordinary language users), rather than using codified knowledge of standards or knowledge of the theoretical background.
This paper reports a study addressing how teacher effectiveness influences student outcomes in Polish Lower Secondary schools. Data from a Polish nationwide lower secondary school study were analysed. Data included 3883 pupils in 246 classes, in 137 schools with 202 maths teachers and 4119 pupils in 260 classes, in 143 schools with 215 language teachers. Variance of exam scores explained by teacher effect was 12% (maths) and 8% (language skills). Controlling for prior achievement, intelligence and student family background, teacher effects were 5% (maths) and 4% (language skills). Until now there has been no consensus about which teacher characteristics could explain variance in their effectiveness. The scale of “teacher authority/classroom management” explains 91% of exam scores in maths and 81% in language skills, when controlling for prior student achievement, intelligence, student family background and school location.
This paper reports a survey conducted in May 2010 on a nationally representative sample of fifteen-year-olds from 70 lower secondary schools. The general research question concerned the prevalence of Polish adolescents who did not read books after completing the phase of compulsory education. The aim of this study was to describe the place of books in teenage everyday life in terms of their reading for school, leisure, spontaneous choice of reading matter, their favourites, books they recommended, value placed on enjoyable reading and their social circle of readers. Gender was found to be a differentiating factor in the reading habits of these young people which the paper broadly describes.
This study analysed the relationship of educational and vocational plans and dimensions of identity deve-lopment, of students in the last year of upper secondary school. The study was conducted in semester I of 2014/2015. 585 students participated from three types of school: basic vocational schools (n = 74), vocational upper secondary schools (n = 186) and general upper secondary schools (n = 325). Two questionnaires were used in this study: the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale – DIDS/PL and a short questionnaire on educational and vocational plans. The results showed that individuals with no further educational plans had a lower level of ruminative exploration and higher level of commitment making than other students and higher level of identification with commitment than those, who had not made any decision yet. Students who had decided to start a full-time work after graduating secondary school had a lower level of exploration in breadth than students who had not any vocational plans as well as they had a lower level of ruminative exploration and a higher level of identification with commitment than the others. An interaction effect of school type and educational/vocation plans, in the process of identity formation was not observed.
Two parallel versions of Children Card Sort (CCS) designed by the authors on the basis of the Dimensional Children Card Sort (DCCS) are presented. Both of these versions of CCS have been standardized for application in the investigation of child executive functioning. In the pilot study, 41 healthy children aged 3–8 were tested and the reliability of both types of CCS investigated. The validity of a method for calculating final scores for different aspects of CCS was also tested. The research confirmed the reliability of both versions of CCS and showed the need for new procedures to calculate final scores. Theoretical foundations of the card sort method, commonly used in the research of child executive functions are described and the concepts of inhibitory control, memory, conceptual reasoning and theories of complexity are discussed. Since none of these concepts are commonly accepted to explain the processes underlying card sorting the authors suggest interpretation of CCS as a measure of cognitive flexibility.

Urbanization of the environment contributes to the degradation of many natural habitats of many plants and animals, which causes reduction of biodiversity. There are however certain species, adapting easily to both suburban and urban conditions. Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a good example, since it is increasingly noted not only in the natural habitats, such as fields or forests, but also in the direct vicinity of human residencies like farms, suburban areas or even large agglomerations. Fox is becoming a permanent feature of urban fauna, enriching the biodiversity. It is also a relevant epidemiological threat, constituting a zoonotic reservoir for many parasites which are important from veterinary, as well as from medical point of view, including tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis which causes alveolar echinococcosis.
The use, collection and modification of human biological material/the human body is a difficult, controversial and challenging subject demanding deep analyses of all the ethical, social and legal aspects. Use of the human body for experimental purposes for or without the reward is often criticized. It is clear, however, that not all researches on new medicinal products, medical devices or cosmetics can be carried out on animals only. Contribution of a human being in experiments and clinical trials (including organs, tissues or cells) is the only way to verify safety and efficacy of a tested method or substance. Storage of human biological material intended for tests demands meeting conditions provided by legal standards and showing respect for the human body and human dignity; that is why biological material must be, as a rule, stored in cell and tissue banks (biobank). Any entity that wants to operate a biobank must meet a number of complex requirements before entering this narrow, difficult and demanding market. This is the result of legislative chaos and fragmentation of laws at the national and EU level, but also social, ethical or religious prejudice. However, biobanks are an indispensable research tool for understanding genetic or environmental grounds of many diseases, e.g. hereditary ones. Biobanks can undoubtedly revolutionize the health market and contribute to the further development of personalized medicine. However, the entity willing to establish a cell and tissue bank must meet and take into account several criteria. Any entity considering the foundation of a biobank wonders whether this activity will be profitable and whether it can be included in the chain of clinical trials.
