On January 5, 2012 an annex to the agreement amending the value of the project “Safe and comprehensive making the Jagiellonian University digital resources available on the Internet. Stage I”, implemented within the framework of the Małopolska Regional Operational Programme 2007-2013 was signed. The total value of the Project amounts now to PLN 2,570,371.22. The MROP Managing Authority grants a subsidy in the amount of: PLN 1,927,778.41, which constitutes 75% of eligible expenditure under the Project, of which the European funds constitute the equivalent of this amount, i.e. 100% of the Project subsidy. Own contribution of the Beneficiary, i.e. the Jagiellonian University amounts to: PLN 642,592.81.

In October 2011, a year elapsed since the initiation of the implementation of the project “Safe and comprehensive making the Jagiellonian University digital resources available on the Internet. Stage I”, which is a continuation and complementation of the “Jagiellonian Digital Library” project. The first year of the project was, above all, the time of deciding the tendering procedures, making required purchases and carrying out recruitment procedure for new positions.

Works within the project focus now on two most important tasks: digitisation of collections and creation of the Jagiellonian Library portal, which will replace the present version of the website. Both tasks are at the initial implementation stage. By the end of October 2011, 76 volumes of periodicals and 121 volumes of music collections (score) had been scanned, of which the total of 29196 scans had been prepared. Among the digitised items, the following can be found: Przyjaciel Ludu from the years 1895-1914, 1919-1933, 1947-1948; Gazeta Krakowska from the years 1802-1823; Nowy Dziennik from the years 1931-1932.

Also intense works related to preparation of the new Jagiellonian Library portal are carried out. So far the works have been carried out exclusively inside the library, but soon the effects of the works will also be visible on the Internet. All departments and IT specialists from the Jagiellonian Library are involved in the process of creation of the new portal.

On September 20, 2010 in Senate Room of Collegium Novum there was a formal signing of agreement for co-financing of the project Safe and comprehensive making the Jagiellonian University digital resources available on the Internet. Stage I. The agreement was signed by the Marshall of the Małopolska Region Marek Nawara and the Rector’s Proxy for Structural Funds Professor Adam Juszkiewicz, PhD and the Bursar of the Jagiellonian University Maria Hulicka, PhD, at the presence of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Professor Karol Musioł, PhD and representatives of the Jagiellonian Library.

The project implementation started in October 2010 and is going to last 3 years. The total cost of the tasks amounts to PLN 2,838,624.00, of which PLN 2,128,968.00 comes from the subsidy from the Małopolska Regional Operational Programme 2007-2013.

The project Safe and comprehensive making the Jagiellonian University digital resources available on the Internet. Stage I covers digitisation of antique collections of the Jagiellonian Library, belonging to the National Library Resources, in order to protect, as well as preserve and make them available to a wider group of users. Within the framework of the project, 2500 unique across the country volumes of prints will be protected, digitised and then made available in a digital form (e.g. “Dziennik Kijowski”, “Kurier Lwowski”, “Kurier Polski”, “Dziennik Urzędowy Województwa Krakowskiego”, “Gazeta Muzyczna”, music brochures from the 19th and first half of the 20th century).

The majority of these collections undergo ongoing and irreversible process of destruction caused, inter alia, by a decomposition of acid paper – digitisation will secure them from their complete loss, and at the same time will allow for unlimited online access to them. Within the project also the creation of a modern, bilingual portal of the Jagiellonian Library including integrated information on resources and e-services of the Library has been scheduled. A modernisation of the Library server room will be carried out and the safe system of archiving the executed digital data will be implemented.

In March 2010, the Jagiellonian Library submitted a complete documentation for the programme: the Małopolska Regional Operational Programme within the competition: Priority Axis 1 – Conditions for knowledge-based society development, Measure 1.2 Development of Information Society. On July 23, 2010 the Małopolska Region Board adopted a decision on the project co-financing. From among 52 projects which were granted subsidies, the project Safe and comprehensive making the Jagiellonian University digital resources available on the Internet. Stage I was located on the fourth place in terms of the score granted. The project is complementary with another undertaking of the Jagiellonian Library subsidies from the structural funds, namely a key project for the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage – Jagiellonian Digital Library, implemented within the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment. Measure 11.1 Protection and preservation of trans-regional cultural heritage.
